What is RSS?

RSS (Really Simple Syndication) is a system which enables you to receive evolving information from the Geological Society's Lyell Collection and display it directly on your own computer. Using free and readily available software (an RSS Reader) you will be able to display headline information without having to visit and browse Lyell Collection pages. Lyell Collection journals offer a range of Feeds, with some variation across the journals, including current content, and lists of both most-read and most-cited articles. Once you have signed up for a Feed you will start to receive the relevant information, together with links back to the full content.

There are many different RSS Readers available, some of which are accessed using your Web browser, and some of which can be downloaded to your computer. All allow you to display and subscribe to the RSS Feeds you want.

What is an RSS Reader?

The RSS Reader receives all the RSS Feeds you have selected and displays them in a format similar to e-mails displayed in your inbox. With each new journal issue that is published, the "Current issue" RSS Feed will include all of the article titles in the issue and the abstracts for those articles that have them, with links to the full text of the articles. "Most-read" and "Most-cited" Feeds are updated monthly. Usually the Reader also indicates whether you have already viewed a particular title.
